Sheet flooring is manufactured in rolls of standard widths: 1.83 m (6 ft), 2.74 m (9 ft), 3.66 m (12 ft), and sometimes 4.57 m (15 ft). They are classified into three main categories:

1.2 Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT)

VCT is the most common resilient tile. Its standard dimensions are 30.48 cm × 30.48 cm (12 in × 12 in) and sometimes 25.4 cm × 25.4 cm (10 in × 10 in). Thickness ranges from 2.0 mm to 3.2 mm.

1.3 Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)

LVT is a thicker multilayer product (3.0 to 6.5 mm) that mimics wood, stone, or concrete. It is available in tile, plank, or slab formats. Two types of installation:

1.4 Linoleum

2. Substrate Preparation

Concrete must have a minimum 28 days of curing before installation

4. Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) Installation Procedures

4.1 Quantity Calculations

Basic formula:

Number of tiles = (Room area in m²) ÷ (Area of one tile in m²) + 5% waste

Example: Room of 4.5 m × 6 m with 30.48 cm × 30.48 cm tiles

Room area = 4.5 × 6 = 27 m²
Area of one tile = 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.0929 m²
Number of tiles = 27 ÷ 0.0929 = 290.6 → 291 tiles
With 5% waste: 291 × 1.05 = 306 tiles

4.2 Installation Method

Step 1: Determining the starting point

For a straight (grid) installation:

3-4-5 method:

Measure 3 m on the reference line

Step 2: Dry lay

Lay out the tiles without adhesive to check alignment
Adjust the position of the lines so that cuts at the walls are ≥ 5 cm (avoid thin slivers)
Verify that the tiles are square to each other

Step 3: Adhesive application

Use a notched trowel suited to the adhesive (see table below)
Apply adhesive to an area of 1.5 to 2 m² at a time (limited open time)
Allow the adhesive to become translucent (open time) before laying the tiles

Step 4: Laying the tiles

Lay the tiles starting from the center toward the walls
Press firmly with the rubber mallet to ensure contact
Use 1.5 mm joint spacers between tiles if specified (some VCT is installed edge-to-edge)
Regularly check alignment with a chalk line

Step 5: Cutting and finishing

Measure each cut individually (walls are never perfectly straight)
Use the hook blade knife to cut VCT (cut from the printed side)
For pipe holes: use the hole punch or cut in two pieces
Install baseboards after installation (they must cover the 3 mm expansion joint)

Step 6: Sealing

Wait 24 hours after installation before sealing
Apply 2 to 3 coats of acrylic sealer (finish) with a foam applicator
Allow 30 to 45 minutes drying time between each coat

4.3 Diagonal Installation (at 45°)

Diagonal installation is more complex but provides an interesting visual effect. Additional steps:

Required length = 5.8 + 0.10 + 0.05 = 5.95 m
Purchased area = 4.57 × 5.95 = 27.2 m²

5.2 Installation Method (Template Method)

Step 1: Preparing the template

Unroll the sheet in an adjacent room (clean and flat)
Cut the sheet to approximate size (5 cm surplus on each edge)
Roll the sheet (printed face outward) for transport

Step 2: Positioning and fitting

Unroll the sheet in the room with a 5 cm surplus against each wall
Align the pattern with the main walls (or the center of the room)
Use the tracing compass to transfer wall contours onto the sheet
Trim the excess with the hook blade knife

Step 4: Adhesive application

Two main methods:

Method 1: Full spread

Apply adhesive to the entire surface with a notched trowel
Allow the appropriate open time
Unroll the sheet gradually while avoiding air bubbles

Method 2: Perimeter bonding

Apply adhesive only to the edges (15 to 20 cm) and at seams
Use a pressure-sensitive adhesive
This method is used for floating floors or when the substrate is non-absorbent

Step 5: Eliminating air bubbles

Use the heavy roller (45 kg) starting from the center toward the edges
For persistent bubbles: pierce with a fine needle and roll again
Bubbles must be eliminated before the adhesive sets

5.3 Welded Seams

When the room width exceeds the roll width, a welded seam is required:

Cold weld:

Used for short seams (less than 3 m)
Product: welding liquid (solvent) applied to the seam
Drying time: 2 to 4 hours

Hot weld:

Used for long seams (more than 3 m) or in commercial areas
Equipment: hot air gun (350 to 400 °C) and welding rod
