2. Substrate Preparation

2.1 General Substrate Requirements

The substrate must be dry, clean, stable, and free of contaminants (dust, oil, wax, paint, adhesive residue). The moisture content of a concrete substrate must not exceed 5% when measured with a carbide hygrometer (CM method) or 4.5% with a calibrated electrical moisture meter. For anhydrite screeds, the maximum rate is 0.5% (CM measurement).

Substrate flatness must meet a tolerance of 3 mm under a 3 m straightedge (or 1/8 in under a 10 ft straightedge). Any irregularity greater than this must be corrected with a self-leveling compound or grinding before installation.

2.3 Concrete Moisture Testing

The carbide hygrometer test (CM method) is the reference method. Procedure:

2.4 Adhesion Test

The pull-off test measures the adhesion of the tile to the substrate. The standard requires a minimum resistance of 0.5 MPa for floor tiles in residential use and 1.0 MPa for commercial applications. This test is performed with a pull-off adhesion tester after a minimum of 28 days of drying.


3. Installation Methods

3.1 Traditional Installation (Thick-Set Method)

The traditional installation uses a cement mortar (sand and cement) applied to the substrate. This method is suitable for large-format tiles, natural stone, and irregular substrates.

Typical mortar composition:

Clean water in sufficient quantity to achieve a plastic consistency

Procedure:

3.2 Thin-Set Installation (Adhesive Method)

Thin-set installation is the most common method. The adhesive (tile adhesive) is applied to the substrate using a notched trowel. The layer thickness ranges from 3 to 10 mm depending on the tile format.

Coverage rule: The adhesive must cover a minimum of 80% of the tile surface for dry interior floors and 95% for wet areas or high-traffic zones. For tiles larger than 60 cm, back-buttering (applying adhesive to both the substrate AND the back of the tile) is mandatory.

3.3 Pedestal Installation (for Raised Pavers)

This method is used for terraces and rooftops. Pavers are installed on adjustable plastic pedestals. The main requirements:

Minimum slope of 1.5% (1/8 in per foot) for water drainage.
Verification of the load-bearing capacity of the substrate.
Uniform joint spacing (typically 5 to 10 mm).

3.4 Diagonal and Checkerboard Installation

Diagonal installation (at 45°) requires precise cut calculations. The waste factor for diagonal installation is 10 to 15% , compared to 5 to 10% for straight installation. Checkerboard installation alternates two tile formats or two colours in a regular pattern.


4. Material Calculations

4.1 Area Calculation

The area of a rectangular room is calculated: Length × Width = Area (m²) .

For an L-shaped room, divide the area into rectangles, calculate each area, then add them together.

Example: A room measuring 4.5 m × 3.2 m = 14.4 m². With a 10% waste factor, the quantity to order is 14.4 × 1.10 = 15.84 m² , rounded up to 16 m².

4.2 Calculating the Number of Tiles

Number of tiles = Total area ÷ Area of one tile

For a 30 × 30 cm tile (0.09 m²): 16 m² ÷ 0.09 m² = 178 tiles (rounded up to the nearest whole number).

4.3 Calculating Adhesive Quantity

Adhesive consumption depends on the trowel notch size:

4.4 Calculating Grout

The amount of grout depends on the width and depth of the joints, as well as the tile format. The simplified formula:

Quantity (kg/m²) = (Joint width (mm) × Joint depth (mm) × 1.5) ÷ Tile format (cm)

For a 30 × 30 cm tile, with 3 mm wide and 8 mm deep joints:

(3 × 8 × 1.5) ÷ 30 = 1.2 kg/m²


5. Tile Installation

5.1 Establishing Reference Lines

Before any installation, reference lines (axes) must be established to ensure alignment and symmetry:

> Exam trap: If the adhesive forms a skin on the surface, it is no longer tacky. It must be removed and reapplied. Never wet the adhesive to extend the open time.


6. Grouting

6.1 Types of Grout

6.2 Grouting Procedure

7. Expansion and Movement

7.1 Expansion Joints

Expansion joints (movement joints) are mandatory to accommodate thermal and structural movement. Their absence causes tile debonding or cracking.

Requirements according to the Canadian Code:

Perimeter expansion joint: mandatory along all walls, columns, and obstructions (minimum width of 6 mm).
Intermediate expansion joint: every 8 to 12 m in each direction for interior floors.
Expansion joint in sun-exposed areas: every 4 to 6 m.
The joint must extend through the full thickness of the tile assembly and be filled with an elastomeric sealant (silicone or polyurethane).

7.2 Soft Joints

Soft joints are elastic grout joints placed within the tile field to reduce stress. They are recommended:

At changes in substrate direction.
Where tile meets another material (wood, metal).
Every 3 to 4 m in high-traffic areas.

7.3 The One-Third Rule

The one-third rule states that tile expansion joints must coincide with the expansion joints of the substrate (concrete slab). If the substrate has an expansion joint, the tile installation must have a joint at the same location.

8.2 NBC Requirements for Floors

Floors in bathrooms, showers, and laundry rooms must be impermeable and easy to clean (Article 9.10.16.1).
Floors in commercial kitchens must be slip-resistant and resistant to chemicals.

9.3 Tap Test

The tap test involves lightly striking each tile with a tool handle. A clear, sharp sound indicates good adhesion; a hollow sound indicates a void beneath the tile. This test is mandatory as part of quality control.


10. Maintenance and Protection

10.1 Protecting the Tile Installation After Completion

Do not walk on the tile for 24 hours after installation.
Do not load the floor for 72 hours.
Protect the surface with cardboard or a protective membrane during subsequent work.
Clean adhesive and grout residue before they fully cure.

10.2 Sealing Porous Tiles

Natural stones (marble, travertine, slate) and certain unglazed ceramic tiles require a sealer (water repellent). The sealer is applied after grouting and complete drying (minimum 7 days). Two coats are generally recommended, with a drying time of 24 hours between each coat.


11. Health and Safety

11.1 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Safety glasses when cutting tiles.
Nitrile gloves for handling adhesives and grouts.
Respiratory protection (N95 mask) when mixing powders.
Hearing protection when using the angle grinder.

11.2 Chemical Hazards

Tiles are heavy and fragile. Use proper lifting techniques (bend the knees, keep the back straight). For loads over 25 kg, ask for help or use material handling equipment.


Pitfalls to Avoid

157.Neglecting the moisture test: Installing tiles on a damp substrate is the #1 cause of debonding. Always perform the test and document the result.
158.Confusing open time and setting time: Open time is the period of adhesive tackiness; setting time is the delay before full curing. Do not walk on the tile during the setting time.
