Introduction to Finishing Levels

The finishing level is a standardized scale from 0 to 5 that defines the quality of surface preparation for gypsum board before applying paint, coatings, or textures. Level 1 — Tape Embedded and Sealing Compound

Level 1 requires taping all joints, interior and exterior angles, with a first coat of joint compound. The tape must be completely embedded in the compound, with no bubbles or wrinkles. Fasteners (screws or nails) must be covered with compound.

This level is typically used for:

Ceilings of unfinished spaces (garages, basements)

Surfaces intended to receive ceramic tile or other material applied directly over the gypsum board

Level 2 — Second Coat of Compound

Level 2 adds a second coat of compound over the tape, widening the compound band. All fasteners receive a second coat. Interior and exterior angles receive an additional coat.

Level 3 — Medium Finish

Level 3 is the minimum recommended level for surfaces intended to receive a roller-applied or spray-applied texture, or a textured finish coating. A third coat of compound is applied over the joints, with progressive widening of the band.

Important note: Level 3 is not recommended for smooth painted surfaces, as joints may be visible under raking light. Level 4 is then required.

Level 4 — Smooth Finish

Level 4 is the most common level for residences and commercial buildings with normal lighting. It requires a fourth coat of compound over joints and angles, with complete sanding to achieve a smooth, uniform surface.

Caution: Level 4 is not sufficient for surfaces with raking light (light directed parallel to the surface) or glossy or semi-gloss finishes. Level 5 is then required.

Level 5 — Superior Finish

Level 5 is the highest quality finish. It requires all the steps of Level 4, plus the application of a uniform compound coat over the entire surface of the gypsum board, not just over the joints. This coat is typically applied with a trowel or roller, then smoothed.

Example: For a stipple texture, the compound is diluted to 20%. For 10 litres of compound:

Step 2 — Gun adjustment: Adjust air pressure (40 to 70 psi depending on type), material flow rate, and nozzle size.

Step 3 — Application: Hold the gun perpendicular to the surface, at a distance of 600 to 900 mm (24 to 36 in). Apply in regular motions, overlapping each pass by 50%.

Step 4 — Texturing (if required): For knockdown, wait 5 to 10 minutes (until the texture no longer sticks to the trowel), then flatten with a stainless steel trowel.

Roller Texture Application

Step 1 — Preparation: Dilute the compound to the consistency of thick paint.
