Module Introduction
This chapter covers the safety requirements and professional practices that every recreational vehicle (RV) technician must master for the Red Seal exam. Safety is not an option—it is integrated into every task, from the initial inspection to the delivery of the vehicle to the customer. You will be evaluated on your ability to identify hazards, apply correct procedures, and comply with applicable Canadian standards.
Legal Responsibilities and Applicable Standards
General Regulatory Framework
As an RV technician, you work under the jurisdiction of national and provincial standards. For the interprovincial exam, you must be familiar with the following documents:
Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CE Code) – Chapter V, published by CSA (Canadian Standards Association). This code governs the electrical installation of RVs. Relevant rules include Section 8 (loads) and Section 62 (wiring systems). Rule 8-200 specifies the minimum loads for service connections.
CSA B149.1 – Natural Gas and Propane Code. This code applies to the installation, modification, and maintenance of propane appliances in RVs.
CSA Z240 – Series of standards for recreational vehicles. CSA Z240.2.1 covers RV construction and safety (structural, electrical, and propane requirements).
Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (Part II of the Canada Labour Code) for federally regulated employees, or equivalent provincial legislation. You must know your rights: the right to refuse dangerous work, the right to know about hazards (WHMIS), and the right to participate in health and safety committees.
Technician Obligations
You must:
Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for each task.
Follow lockout/tagout procedures before any work on electrical, propane, or hydraulic systems.
Report any hazard or incident to your immediate supervisor.
Keep your certifications current (e.g., propane training, WHMIS, first aid).
WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
Hazard Classification
WHMIS is based on the Hazardous Products Regulations (HPR) and the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). You must recognize the following pictograms and hazard classes:

Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
Every hazardous product must have an SDS accessible in the shop. The SDS contains 16 mandatory sections. For the exam, remember:
Section 1: Product and supplier identification.
Section 2: Hazard identification (GHS classification).
Section 4: First aid measures.
Section 6: Accidental release measures.
Section 7: Handling and storage.
Rule of thumb: if you are unsure how to handle a product, consult the SDS before use. Never guess.
Labels
WHMIS labels must include:
The product name.
Hazard pictograms.
Signal word (Danger or Warning).
Hazard statements (H) and precautionary statements (P).
Supplier identifier.
Exam trap: you may be asked to distinguish a workplace label (small container) from a supplier label. A workplace label may be reduced, but it must always identify the product and its main hazards.

RV-Specific PPE
Dielectric gloves: for work on 12 V batteries or the 120 V electrical system. They must be tested regularly (test date stamped).
Cartridge mask: when using sealants (urethane sealant, silicone) or aerosol paint.
Face shield: when removing suspension springs or parts under mechanical tension.
Golden rule: PPE is the last line of defence. Eliminate the hazard at the source first (e.g., ventilation, product substitution).
Lockout and Energy Safety Procedures
Lockout Principles
Lockout is mandatory before any work on a system that can release hazardous energy. Energy sources in an RV include:
Electrical (120 V, 12 V, solar).
Mechanical (hydraulic jacks, levers).
Thermal (propane heating system).
Chemical (pressure in propane lines).
Gravitational (suspended parts).
Standard Procedure (6 Steps)
54.Notify all affected workers of the intervention.
55.Shut down the equipment (de-energize the RV, close the propane valve).
56.Isolate the energy source (disconnect the 120 V plug, close the main propane valve).
57.Lock out and tag (each worker applies their personal lock).
58.Dissipate residual energy (discharge capacitors, purge propane lines).
59.Verify the absence of energy (voltage tester on 120 V wires, gas detector for propane).
Exam trap: lockout does not apply only to 120 V. Propane and hydraulic jacks are hazardous energy sources that are frequently overlooked.
Battery Work
RV batteries (12 V, sometimes 24 V) can produce very high short-circuit current. Procedure:
Always disconnect the negative terminal first, then the positive.
Reconnect the positive first, then the negative.
Wear safety glasses (risk of hydrogen explosion).
Never smoke near a charging battery.
Propane Safety
Propane Properties
Propane is heavier than air (relative density ≈ 1.5). It accumulates at ground level.
Its lower explosive limit (LEL) is 2.1% and its upper explosive limit (UEL) is 9.5% in air.
It is odourless in its pure state; an odorant (ethanethiol) is added for detection.
CSA B149.1 Rules Applicable to RVs
Propane tanks must be installed outside the vehicle, in a compartment vented to the outside.
The service valve must be accessible and protected from impact.
Propane lines must be copper or steel, with approved fittings (no standard compression fittings).
A propane detector must be installed in the living compartment (Rule 6.24 of CSA B149.1 for mobile homes, applicable to RVs by reference).
The test pressure must be 3.5 kPa (0.5 psi) for low-pressure systems, and 1.4 MPa (200 psi) for high-pressure lines before connection.
Leak Testing
Standard procedure:
80.Close all appliance valves.
81.Open the tank valve.
82.Apply a soapy water solution (or use an electronic detector) on all fittings.
83.Observe for bubble formation (leak) or detector alarm.
84.Never test for leaks with a flame.
Leak volume calculation: if using a manometer, the pressure drop must not exceed 0.1 kPa (0.014 psi) in 10 minutes after stabilization. For a 3.5 kPa system, this represents approximately 2.8% of the initial pressure.

CE Code Chapter V Rules
Rule 8-200: minimum load for an RV service connection = 30 A at 120 V for vehicles under 40 m² (430 ft²) of floor area. Above that, 50 A at 120/240 V.
Rule 62-100: conductors must be a minimum of 12 AWG for 15 A circuits and 10 AWG for 30 A circuits.
Rule 62-110: receptacles on the exterior of the RV must be protected by a Class A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI).
Rule 62-120: the grounding conductor (green or green/yellow) must be continuous and connected to the vehicle chassis.
Protection Devices
GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter): protects against electric shock. Trips at 5 mA ± 1 mA. Test monthly with the test button.
AFCI (arc fault circuit interrupter): protects against electrical fires. Required in RV bedrooms per the CE Code.
Surge protector: protects against transient overvoltages (lightning, switching). Recommended, but not required.
Absence of Voltage Verification Procedure
99.Use an approved voltage tester (CAT III or higher).
100.Verify the tester on a known live source (e.g., energized 120 V receptacle).
101.Test the conductors to be verified.
102.Re-verify the tester on the known live source.
Exam trap: a voltage tester must be verified before AND after the test. If the tester is defective, you could believe there is no voltage when there actually is.
Professional Practices and Customer Service
Customer Communication
Explain repairs in clear terms, without excessive technical jargon.
Provide a written estimate before work begins (cost, parts, labour, taxes).
Obtain written authorization for any cost overrun exceeding 10% of the initial estimate.
Document the vehicle's condition upon reception (photos, notes) to avoid disputes.
Work Order and Documentation
A complete work order must include:
Order number, date, customer name.
Description of the reported problem.
Preliminary inspection results.
Itemized parts and labour.
Customer and technician signatures.
Warranties
Replacement parts must conform to manufacturer specifications (CSA, UL, etc.).
Propane system repairs must be certified by a qualified technician (valid propane certification).
The legal warranty (1 year) applies to parts and labour, unless otherwise indicated.
Waste Management and Environment

Pitfalls to Avoid
138.Neglecting propane lockout: you lock out the 120 V but forget to close the propane valve. Propane is a hazardous energy source under the law.
139.Testing a propane leak with a flame: this is a serious and dangerous error. Always use a soapy solution or an electronic detector.
140.Confusing GFCI and AFCI: the GFCI protects against shock (5 mA), the AFCI protects against arc faults. Both are required in RVs, but in different locations.
141.Disconnecting the positive battery terminal first: this can create an arc and cause an explosion. Always disconnect the negative first.
142.Using an unverified voltage tester: verification before and after is mandatory. A defective tester can give a false sense of safety.
143.Forgetting the minimum load (Rule 8-200): an RV over 40 m² requires a 50 A service. Do not confuse this with the total floor area.
144.Ignoring SDS: if you use a product without reading its SDS, you risk hazardous exposure and regulatory non-compliance.
145.Not documenting vehicle condition: in the event of a dispute, you have no proof of the initial state.
146.Purging propane indoors: always outdoors, away from ignition sources.
147.Using standard compression fittings for propane: only CSA-approved fittings are acceptable. Standard compression fittings can loosen under vibration.
