Exam Trap: You will sometimes be asked to distinguish the "Health hazard" pictogram (silhouette with star) from the "Exclamation mark" pictogram. The former indicates serious long-term effects (carcinogenicity, mutagenicity), while the latter indicates less severe acute effects (irritation).

Golden Rule: Safety glasses with side shields are mandatory during any cutting, drilling, grinding, or chemical handling operation. Contact lenses do not replace safety glasses.

Code Rule: Extinguishers must be checked monthly (pressure, pin, accessibility) and undergo annual maintenance by a certified technician. The maximum travel distance to an extinguisher in a workshop is 25 metres for Class A fires and 15 metres for Class B fires.

Hazardous Materials and Environmental Management

Identification and Storage of Hazardous Materials

The parts technician handles hazardous materials daily: oils, brake fluid, coolant, solvents, batteries, fuels. You must know storage and compatibility rules.

Storage rules:

Flammable liquids must be stored in approved cabinets (minimum 30-minute fire resistance) with a spill containment tray.
Incompatible materials must be separated: acids must never be stored with bases, oxidizers with flammables.
Containers must be tightly sealed and labelled.
Spill containment trays must have a capacity of at least 110% of the volume of the largest container or 25% of the total stored volume.

Canadian Electrical Code, Part I: This code, which is part of the CSA standards, governs electrical installations in locations where flammable materials are present. Rule 8-200 of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I concerns service conductors and overcurrent protection. For the parts technician, knowledge of this code is relevant for the installation of lighting systems and electrical outlets in flammable material storage areas: outlets must be at a minimum height of 1.5 metres from the floor in areas where flammable vapours may accumulate.

Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

SDS are 16-section documents provided by chemical product suppliers. The most important sections for the parts technician:

The parts technician is an intermediary between suppliers, mechanics, and customers. Communication skills are assessed in the exam through scenario-based questions.

Bilingual technical terminology: The Red Seal exam can be taken in French or English. You must know technical terms in both languages, as catalogues and databases are often in English.
