Braking Systems — Fundamental Principles
Air Brakes (Pneumatic System)
The majority of commercial trailers in Canada use air brakes. The system works on the following principle: compressed air (typically between 100 and 120 psi / 690 to 830 kPa) is used to actuate the brakes.
Main Components:
Operating Principle: When the driver presses the brake pedal, compressed air is sent from the tractor's tank to the trailer's relay valve via the service line (blue line). The relay valve amplifies the signal and sends air to the brake chambers. The chambers convert pressure into linear force, which is amplified by the slack adjuster lever and applied to the brake shoes.
Parking Brakes: Trailers use spring brakes on the front axle (or both axles). The spring is compressed by air pressure; in the event of pressure loss, the spring expands and applies the brakes. This is a fail-safe system.
Brake Force Calculation: The braking force (F) is calculated by:
F = P × A × L / R

ABS/EBS Brakes
The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) has been mandatory on trailers in Canada since 1996. The Electronic Braking System (EBS) is an evolution that integrates electronic management of brake pressure.
