Alternating current (AC) at 60 Hz is particularly dangerous because it causes muscle tetanization: the victim cannot let go. Direct current (DC) causes a violent contraction that throws the victim back. Both are lethal.
Lockout/Tagout Procedures
Although lockout/tagout is more commonly associated with industrial environments, the appliance service technician must apply an adapted version:

CSA Z462 Rule: this standard governs electrical safety at work. It requires that any work near exposed live parts be performed with PPE suited to the risk category. The clamp meter measures current without interrupting the circuit. Place the clamp around a single conductor (never around both phases together, as the fields cancel out and the reading will be zero). Non-Contact Voltage Tester
Also called a "voltage pen," it detects the presence of voltage through capacitive detection. Caution: this tool can give false positives (induced voltage) and false negatives (masked voltage). It never replaces a multimeter for verifying the absence of voltage. Use it only as a pre-check tool.
Manifold Gauge Set
For refrigeration appliances (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners), the manifold gauge set measures high and low side pressures in the circuit. Hoses are color-coded: blue (low pressure), red (high pressure), yellow (charge or vacuum). Check fitting seals before each use.
Gas Leak Detector
For natural gas or propane appliances, use a soap solution (bubbles) or an electronic detector. The soap solution is reliable and economical: apply it to the fittings and observe bubble formation. The electronic detector is more sensitive but requires regular calibration.
