2.2.2 Key Sections of the SDS

The SDS has 16 sections. For the exam, focus on:

Section 1: Identification of the product and supplier.
Section 2: Hazard identification (classification, pictograms, hazard statements).
Section 4: First-aid measures.
Section 6: Accidental release measures.
Section 8: Exposure controls / personal protection (exposure limits, required PPE).

2.2.3 WHMIS Labels

3. Hazards on the Job Site and Their Control

3.1 The Hierarchy of Hazard Controls

To control a hazard, apply the following hierarchy (from most effective to least effective):

3.2 Physical Hazards

Guardrails: mandatory for any platform over 1.2 m (4 ft) in height (according to most regulations, but check CSA Z797 for guardrails).
Safety nets: under elevated work areas.
Safety harnesses: mandatory if no other fall protection system is in place. The harness must be anchored to a point capable of supporting 22 kN (2,200 kg) per worker.

Important calculation: For a 6 m ladder leaning against a wall, the base must be 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5 m from the wall.

3.2.2 Electrical Hazards

The Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CSA C22.1) governs temporary electrical installations on construction sites.

Key rules:

Rule 8-200: Branch circuit conductors must be protected against mechanical damage.
Rule 10-204: Grounding of all equipment is mandatory.
Rule 26-700: Receptacles on construction sites must be GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) type or protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter.

3.3 Chemical and Biological Hazards

3.3.1 Crystalline Silica

Silica is a known carcinogen found in concrete, brick, and granite. At-risk tasks: cutting, grinding, drilling, sandblasting.

Control measures:

Source capture: tools with built-in dust collection.
Water: wet cutting.
Ventilation: general and local exhaust.
PPE: N95 respirator at minimum, or half-mask with P100 cartridges.

Exposure limit: The occupational exposure limit (OEL) for crystalline silica is 0.025 mg/m³ (8-hour time-weighted average) in most Canadian jurisdictions.

3.3.2 Asbestos

Asbestos is found in buildings constructed before 1990 (insulation, pipes, tiles, etc.). Any disturbance of asbestos is prohibited without specialized training and equipment.

Golden rule: If you discover a suspect material (friable, fibrous), stop work, report it to your supervisor, and do not touch anything.

3.3.3 Gases and Vapours

Carbon monoxide (CO): odourless, colourless, deadly. Sources: generators, gasoline engines in enclosed spaces.
Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S): rotten egg odour, paralyzes the sense of smell after a few minutes.
Flammable gases: propane, methane, acetylene.

Confined space: A confined space is a space not designed for continuous occupancy, with restricted entry/exit, and which may contain a hazardous atmosphere. Examples: tanks, pits, tunnels, manholes.

Confined space entry procedure:

4.2 Noise Exposure Limits

Noise is a major physical hazard. General rules:

85 dBA over 8 hours: action level (hearing protection mandatory).
90 dBA over 8 hours: maximum exposure limit.
Every increase of 3 dBA cuts the permitted exposure time in half (doubling rate rule).

Calculation: If the noise level is 88 dBA, the maximum time is 8 ÷ 2 = 4 hours.


5. Permits and Signage

5.1 Types of Permits
