Definitions and Essential Terminology

Countertop: A horizontal work surface, typically installed in kitchens and bathrooms, that must resist moisture, heat, and impact.

Backsplash: A vertical surface installed between the countertop and upper cabinets (or the wall), protecting the wall from splashes and moisture.

Specialized Surfaces: Include island countertops, undermount sinks, composite material work surfaces, natural stone surfaces, and high-frequency commercial installations.

Drainage Slope: A minimum incline of 2° (approximately 3.5 mm per 100 mm) required on horizontal surfaces exposed to water, such as bathroom countertops around a sink.

Substrate Preparation for Countertops and Backsplashes

Structural Requirements

Before any installation, the substrate must be verified according to the following criteria:

Plywood Substrate: For a ceramic or stone countertop, the plywood must have a minimum thickness of 19 mm (3/4 in), be exterior grade, and be fastened to cabinets with a maximum spacing of 400 mm between supports. The plywood must be sealed on all faces to prevent moisture-induced swelling.

Concrete Substrate: The concrete must be at least 28 days old, clean, free of laitance, and have a minimum compressive strength of 25 MPa. A crack isolation membrane is required if cracks are present or if the substrate is subject to thermal movement.

Leveling and Alignment

Material Selection for Countertops

Ceramic and Porcelain

Natural Stone

Granite, marble, quartzite, and travertine are used for high-end countertops. Each stone has distinct characteristics:

Granite: High resistance to scratching and heat. Water absorption of 0.2 to 0.5%. Requires periodic sealing.
Marble: Sensitive to acids (lemon juice, vinegar). Absorption of 0.5 to 2%. Sealing mandatory.
Quartzite: Very hard, heat resistant. Absorption < 0.1%. Difficult to cut.
Travertine: Porous, requires filling of cavities with epoxy grout.

Load Calculation: Natural stone weighs approximately 2,700 kg/m³. For a countertop measuring 3 m × 0.6 m × 0.03 m, the weight is:

Volume = 3 × 0.6 × 0.03 = 0.054 m³

Weight = 0.054 × 2,700 = 145.8 kg

This weight must be supported by the cabinets and the substrate.

Composite Materials and Quartz

Engineered quartz countertops contain approximately 90% natural quartz and 10% resins. They offer superior color uniformity and stain resistance compared to natural stone. Caution: Cutting these materials generates crystalline silica — respiratory protective equipment is mandatory (requirement of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations).

Large-Format Tiles

Large-format tiles (≥ 60 cm × 60 cm) are increasingly used for countertops. They require:

Substrate flatness of ± 1.5 mm over 2 m (stricter than normal).
Rapid-setting thin-set mortar with a 12 mm notch trowel.
Systematic beating with a beating plate to ensure 100% mortar transfer.

Installing Tile Countertops

Installation Method

44.Applying Thin-Set Mortar: Use a 10 to 12 mm notched trowel for medium-format tiles, 15 mm for large formats. The trowel angle must be 45° relative to the surface.
45.Tile Placement: Start at the front edge of the countertop (the most visible), then work toward the back. Use 2 to 3 mm spacers for the joints.
46.Beating: Beat each tile with a rubber mallet to ensure full contact. Verify mortar transfer by lifting a test tile — the mortar must cover at least 95% of the surface.

Calculating Surface Area and Number of Tiles

Countertop area = 2.4 × 0.6 = 1.44 m²

Area of one tile = 0.3 × 0.3 = 0.09 m²

Number of tiles = 1.44 ÷ 0.09 = 16 tiles

Add 10% for cuts and breakage: 16 × 1.10 = 17.6 → 18 tiles.

General Formula: N = (L × l) ÷ (a × b) × 1.10, where L and l are the countertop dimensions, and a and b are the tile dimensions.

Joints and Grout

For countertops, the grout must be:

Epoxy: Recommended for kitchen countertops (resistance to stains and chemicals). Curing time of 24 to 72 hours.
Modified Cementitious: Acceptable for residential bathroom countertops, with a penetrating sealer applied after drying.

Joint Width: 2 to 3 mm for rectified tiles, 3 to 5 mm for non-rectified tiles. Joints over 6 mm require sanded grout.

Backsplash Installation

Specialized Surfaces

Island Countertops

Islands present particular challenges:

Support: The island must be supported independently of wall cabinets. Verify the floor load-bearing capacity (minimum 4.8 kPa for commercial use).
Overhang: A maximum overhang of 300 mm without additional support for 30 mm thick stone countertops. Beyond that, steel supports or brackets are required.
Ventilation: If the island contains a cooktop or sink, provide ventilation clearances according to the National Building Code.

Drop-In and Undermount Sinks

Drop-In Sink: The opening must be cut with a fine-blade jigsaw. The sink rim must be flush with the finished countertop. Apply a bead of silicone under the rim before installation.

Undermount Sink: The sink is fastened beneath the countertop. Requirements:

Temporary support during adhesive curing (24 hours minimum).
Fastening with stainless steel clips spaced at a maximum of 150 mm.
Silicone sealant joint between the sink and the underside of the countertop.
The countertop must have a 2° slope toward the sink to prevent water stagnation.

Commercial Countertops

For commercial applications (restaurants, laboratories), requirements are more stringent:

PEI 5 porcelain tiles or high-density natural stone.
100% epoxy grout (chemical resistance).
Expansion joints every 4.5 m in both directions.
Full waterproofing membrane beneath the tiles.

Applicable NBC Rules

Article 9.30.1.1: Work surfaces must be impermeable and easy to clean.

Calculating Required Thin-Set Mortar

For a countertop of 1.44 m²:

Quantity = 1.44 × 4 = 5.76 kg → 1 bag of 10 kg (with margin).

Calculating Grout

The amount of grout depends on the width and depth of the joints:

Quantity (kg/m²) = (L + l) × e × p × 1.6 ÷ (L × l)

Where L and l are the tile dimensions (mm), e is the joint width (mm), p is the joint depth (mm), and 1.6 is the grout density (kg/L).

Example: 300 × 300 mm tiles, 3 mm joints, 6 mm depth:

Quantity = (300 + 300) × 3 × 6 × 1.6 ÷ (300 × 300) = 600 × 3 × 6 × 1.6 ÷ 90,000 = 17,280 ÷ 90,000 = 0.192 kg/m²

Calculating Drainage Slope

For a bathroom countertop 600 mm deep with a 2° slope:

Drop = 600 × tan(2°) = 600 × 0.0349 = 20.9 mm

This drop is excessive for a countertop. In practice, the recommended slope is 1° (approximately 10 mm over 600 mm), which gives:

Drop = 600 × tan(1°) = 600 × 0.0175 = 10.5 mm

Detailed Installation Procedures

Complete Procedure for a Porcelain Countertop
