Faux finishes are a subcategory of decorative finishes where you reproduce the appearance of a material without using the actual material.

Surface-effect finishes: applied as a continuous film (glazes, patinas, tinted varnishes).
Texture-effect finishes: modify the roughness or relief of the substrate (plasters, stuccos, sand).

Optical Properties of Coatings

The perception of a finish depends on three physical properties:

Surface Preparation for Decorative Finishes

General Requirements per CSA Standards

Preparation is the most critical step. A decorative finish does not hide defects; it amplifies them. You must comply with the requirements of CSA A123.1 for wood substrates and the recommendations of the National Building Code of Canada 2020 (NBC) for interior surfaces.

Before any application:

The surface must be dry (substrate relative humidity ≤ 12% for wood, ≤ 8% for plaster).
Ambient temperature must be between 15 °C and 30 °C, and relative humidity between 30% and 60%.
Any trace of contaminant (grease, silicone, dust, efflorescence) must be removed.

Sanding and Dust Removal

Sanding is done in several passes, with progressively finer abrasives:

Grit 80 – 100: removal of old coatings and major imperfections.
Grit 120 – 150: intermediate smoothing.
Grit 180 – 220: final sanding before applying glaze or patina.

After sanding, remove dust with a damp cloth or a vacuum equipped with a HEPA filter. Never use a dry cloth, as it generates static electricity that attracts fine particles.

Primers and Sealers

The choice of primer depends on the substrate and the intended finish:

Alkyd primer: for new wood, it blocks tannins and ensures optimal adhesion.
Acrylic primer: for plaster and drywall, it evens out absorption.
Shellac-based sealer: for stubborn stains (nicotine, ink, water rings). Shellac is compatible with all types of finishes.

> Rule of Thumb: The primer should be tinted to a shade close to the final colour of the decorative finish. This reduces the number of coats needed and avoids unwanted transparency effects.


Faux Finishing Techniques: Methods and Application

Glaze

Glaze is a transparent or semi-transparent medium, coloured with pigments, applied over an opaque base. It allows you to create effects of depth and movement.

Basic glaze formula:

1 part glazing medium (or clear varnish)
1 part water or thinner (depending on the base)
Pigments at 5% to 15% of total volume

Application: Glaze is applied with a brush, roller, or cloth, then worked with specific tools (comb, sponge, long-bristle brush) while still wet. The open time (the period during which the glaze remains workable) is generally 15 to 30 minutes, depending on temperature and humidity.

Patina

Patina is a technique that artificially ages a surface to give it an antique or worn appearance. It is applied over metallic bases (copper, brass) or over metallic-effect paints.

Method:

Faux Marble

Faux marble imitates the veining and colours of natural marble. It requires a smooth, very hard base (epoxy or polyurethane primer).

Key steps:

Required tools: wood graining comb, graining brush, grain roller, brown or ochre glaze.

Procedure:

Texture-Effect Finishes

Stucco and Decorative Plaster

Stucco is a plaster based on lime, cement, or resin, applied in a thick coat (2 to 5 mm) to create relief. It is used on interior walls and facades.

Types of stucco:

Lime stucco: vapour-permeable, ideal for older buildings.
Cement stucco: very durable, for wet areas.
Acrylic stucco: flexible, resists micro-cracking, easy to apply.

Application: Stucco is applied with a trowel in two coats. The first coat (scratch coat) ensures adhesion; the second (finish coat) is floated to achieve the desired texture. Drying time between coats is 24 to 48 hours.

Sand Texturing and Granular Plasters

Granular plasters contain sand or quartz particles. They are applied with a roller or a spray machine.

Grain size: Particle size is measured in microns (μm). Grains from 0.5 to 1.0 mm give a fine texture; grains from 1.5 to 2.5 mm give a rustic effect.

Calculating the Surface Area to Cover

The surface area to cover is calculated in square metres (m²). For a rectangular wall:

Area = Length × Height

For a complete room, add up the wall areas, then subtract the openings (doors, windows):

Net area = Gross area − (Door area + Window area)

> Example: A room measuring 4 m × 5 m with a ceiling height of 2.7 m. Doors: 2 × (0.9 m × 2.1 m) = 3.78 m². Windows: 1 × (1.2 m × 1.5 m) = 1.8 m².

Product Coverage Rates

The coverage of a paint or glaze is expressed in square metres per litre (m²/L). It depends on the porosity of the substrate, the film thickness, and the application method.

Calculating Drying and Recoat Times

Ambient temperature (a ΔT of 10 °C can double or triple drying time).
Relative humidity (the higher it is, the slower the drying).
Ventilation (an air current accelerates solvent evaporation).

> Golden Rule: Never apply a second coat if the first is still tacky to the touch. This would cause film tearing and irreversible marks.


Standards and Safety

Applicable Canadian Standards

Decorative finishes must comply with the following standards:

CAN/CGSB-1.181: Paints and varnishes — determination of drying time.
CAN/CGSB-1.189: Paints and varnishes — determination of volatile organic compound (VOC) content.
CSA B149.1: Natural Gas and Propane Code — applicable if you use temporary heating devices to accelerate drying.
Canadian Electrical Code, Part I: Rule 8-200 — requirements for temporary lighting circuits on job sites. Work lamps must be protected and grounded.

Chemical Safety and WHMIS

Decorative finishing products often contain solvents, metallic pigments, and acids. You must:

Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator (cartridge mask for organic vapours) when applying solvent-based products.
Use nitrile gloves (resistant to solvents) and tight-fitting safety glasses.

Waste Management

Rags soaked with oil or solvent can spontaneously ignite. They must be placed in metal containers with lids and disposed of in accordance with provincial hazardous waste regulations. Never throw them in the regular garbage.


Pitfalls to Avoid
