For the Red Seal exam, you must master not only application techniques, but also blueprint reading, quantity estimating, surface preparation, safety management, and work coordination. This module represents approximately 15 to 20% of the exam questions, making it a high-weight section.

Reading and Interpreting Plans and Specifications

Types of Documents

An interprovincial painter-decorator must know how to read and interpret several types of technical documents. Architectural plans (scale 1/50 or 1/100) show the general layout of rooms, dimensions, openings (doors and windows), and surface finishes. Detail drawings (scale 1/5, 1/2, or 1/1) specify junctions, profiles, moldings, and finishing details. Specifications describe in writing the materials, application methods, quality standards, and required warranties.

You must recognize the following standardized symbols on plans:

Primer: Base coat

Finish symbols are often indicated in a finish schedule on the plan or in the specifications. For example, "P-1" may designate a semi-gloss latex paint on walls and ceilings, while "P-2" designates a gloss alkyd paint on trim.

Scales and Measurements

Plans are drawn at different scales. To convert a measurement on the plan to an actual dimension, multiply the plan measurement by the scale denominator. For example, on a plan at 1/50 scale, a distance of 4 cm on the plan represents 4 cm × 50 = 200 cm = 2 m in reality.

Surface Area Calculation: For a rectangular wall, area = length × height. For a complete room, add the areas of all walls, then subtract openings (doors, windows) greater than 2 m² each. Openings less than 2 m² are generally not deducted, because the extra paint required around the frames compensates for the area saved.

Calculation Example: A room measures 4 m × 5 m with a ceiling height of 2.7 m. The perimeter is 2 × (4 + 5) = 18 m. The wall area is 18 m × 2.7 m = 48.6 m². If the room has one door (0.9 m × 2.1 m = 1.89 m²) and two windows (1.2 m × 1.5 m = 1.8 m² each), the total opening area is 1.89 + 1.8 + 1.8 = 5.49 m². Since each opening is less than 2 m², you only deduct the door (1.89 m²) and do not deduct the windows (since each is less than 2 m²). The net paintable area is therefore 48.6 − 1.89 = 46.71 m². In practice, you round up to 47 m².

Estimating Quantities and Costs

Calculating Paint Surface Areas

The general rule for estimating the amount of paint required is as follows:

The coverage rate of a paint depends on the product type, substrate porosity, and application method. Typical coverage rates are:

Example: To paint 47 m² of walls with two coats of semi-gloss latex (coverage rate of 9 m²/L):

Quantity = (47 ÷ 9) × 2 = 5.22 × 2 = 10.44 L

You should therefore plan for approximately 11 L, either one 11.4 L container (3 Canadian gallons) or two 5.7 L containers (1.5 gallons each). Always round up to account for losses (10% on average).

Calculating Perimeters and Molding Lengths

For moldings (base shoe, quarter-round, chair rails), measure the linear length in meters. For baseboards, measure the room perimeter minus the width of the doors. For door and window casings, measure the outside perimeter of each frame.

Room Perimeter Formula: P = 2 × (L + W), where L is the length and W is the width.

Ceiling Area Formula: A = L × W (for a rectangular ceiling). For a sloped ceiling, use the actual sloped surface area, not the horizontal projection.

Cost Estimating

The total cost of a painting project includes:

Surface Preparation

Fundamental Principles

Surface preparation is the most important step to ensure adhesion and durability of the paint system. A trade saying: "Paint doesn't hide defects; it reveals them." The basic principles are:

Sanding and Abrasives

Sanding creates a surface profile that improves the mechanical anchoring of paint. Abrasives are classified according to their grit size:

Treating Common Problems

Rusty nails: Strip the nail head, apply a rust inhibitor (oil-based primer or anti-rust product), then fill and sand.

Cracks and holes: Open the crack into a V-shape with a putty knife, remove loose material, apply spackling compound (latex or gypsum-based), let dry, sand, and repeat if necessary.

Mold: Clean with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 3 parts water), rinse thoroughly, let dry completely, then apply a mold-resistant primer.

Flaking paint: Scrape off loose paint with a scraper, sand the edges to feather them, apply primer to bare areas, then paint.

Chalking: Brush the surface to remove chalk dust, wash, then apply a bonding primer if chalking persists.

Safety Standards for Preparation

Lead: Lead-based paints have been banned in Canada since 1976 for residential use. If you are working on a surface painted before 1976, have the paint tested. In the presence of lead, follow the Reduction of Lead Exposure Regulations (Health Canada) and use appropriate containment and respiratory protection methods.
Asbestos: Wallboard and plaster containing asbestos may be present in buildings constructed before 1990. Never sand these surfaces without prior testing and containment measures.
Silica: Sanding certain plasters and concrete can release crystalline silica. Use a HEPA-filtered vacuum and at minimum an N95 respirator.

Compatibility Rule: You can apply latex paint over well-adhered alkyd paint, but you cannot apply alkyd paint over latex paint without a bonding primer. Alkyd paints have superior adhesion on smooth, glossy surfaces.

Primers

Primer is a preparatory coat that ensures adhesion, equalizes absorption, and seals the substrate. Types of primers:

Safety and Regulations

Applicable Legislation

The Canada Labour Code (Part II) and the Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (COHSR) apply to workplaces under federal jurisdiction. For construction work, the Safety Code for Construction Work (part of the COHSR) defines requirements for scaffolding, ladders, elevating platforms, and confined spaces.

The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) requires that all chemical products be identified with labels and accompanied by a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) . You must know the hazard pictograms and hazard statements for each product used.

Working at Heights

Essential rules for ladder work:

The angle of inclination must be 75.5° (4:1 ratio — base 1 m from the wall for every 4 m of height)
The ladder must extend at least 1 m above the landing point
Never stand on the top three rungs
Maintain three points of contact (two feet and one hand)
Never move a ladder with a person on it

For scaffolding, the maximum load must be posted and respected. Scaffolds must be erected by competent persons and inspected before each use.

Waste Management

Paint waste is considered hazardous waste in most Canadian provinces. General rules:

Never pour paint into sewers or drains
Let leftover latex paint dry out and dispose of it with household waste (in most municipalities)
Used solvents must be stored in sealed containers and taken to a hazardous waste collection facility
Empty paint containers must be punctured and dried before disposal

Quality Control

Surface Inspection

Before starting work, inspect surfaces to verify:
