The NBC is a model document adopted by provinces and territories. The Red Seal exam is based on its technical requirements. The relevant sections for the drywall finisher:

A rate above 1% is unacceptable for installation. The board must be rejected.

4.2 Surface Preparation

Before any compound or plaster application:

4.4 Corner Finishing

Interior corners (inside corners) and exterior corners (outside corners) have specific requirements:

Interior corners: paper tape or mesh tape, compound applied in two passes, then sanding
Exterior corners: metal corner beads fastened with compound or nails, then compound applied over the flanges

Tolerance: An exterior corner must be perfectly plumb (maximum deviation of 3 mm over 3 m). Check with a level or plumb bob.

Exam trap: You will be asked the difference between an interior and exterior corner. The interior corner uses tape, the exterior corner uses a metal corner bead.

4.5 Plaster Application (Rendering)

For traditional plaster (lime, gypsum), ASTM C842 requirements:

Total thickness: 10 mm minimum for a three-coat render (scratch coat, brown coat, finish coat)
Thickness per coat: 5 mm maximum per coat, otherwise risk of cracking
Drying time: 24 h minimum between coats
Temperature: 10 °C minimum, 35 °C maximum

Quantity calculation: For a 50 m² surface with a total thickness of 10 mm:

Volume = 50 m² × 0.01 m = 0.5 m³ = 500 L

A 30 kg bag of plaster produces approximately 20 L of ready-mix mortar. Therefore, you need 500 / 20 = 25 bags.


5. Final Inspection and Control

5.1 Raking Light Inspection

Raking light (grazing light) is the standard method for detecting surface defects. The light is directed parallel to the surface, at an angle of 5° to 15°. Defects appear as cast shadows.

Tolerance calculation: If a surface has a 2 mm hollow under a 1.2 m straightedge, is it compliant for Level 5?
