The trade of drywall finisher and plasterer involves applying compounds, coatings, and finishes to interior and exterior building surfaces. A person working in this trade must master the manual and mechanical application of joint compounds, traditional plastering, the installation of cornices and ornamental features, as well as the repair and restoration of existing surfaces.

At the interprovincial level, this trade is regulated by the Red Seal program, which recognizes the skills of qualified workers across Canada. The exam assesses your knowledge of safety standards, materials, application techniques, surface area and material consumption calculations, as well as blueprint and specification reading.

Roles and Responsibilities of the Drywall Finisher and Plasterer

Scope of Practice

The drywall finisher and plasterer performs the following tasks:

Applying joint compound to gypsum board joints (taping and coating).
Applying textured finishes (spray, roller, trowel).
Applying traditional plaster (lime, cement, gypsum) over lath or masonry.
Repairing cracks, holes, and damage to finished surfaces.
Installing cornices, rosettes, and decorative plaster elements.
Applying exterior finishes (stucco) and exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS).
Reading blueprints, specifications, and technical documents.

Professional Responsibilities

A journeyperson must:

Work in compliance with applicable building codes (National Building Code of Canada, NBC).

Applicable Laws and Regulations

At the federal level, the Canada Labour Code (Part II) applies to workplaces under federal jurisdiction. In most provinces, provincial occupational health and safety (OHS) laws apply. The journeyperson must know the general principles of these laws, including:

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Head Protection

A safety helmet conforming to CSA Z94.1 must be worn on every construction site. It protects against falling objects, electrical shocks, and impacts. The helmet must be inspected regularly for cracks, deformation, or wear. The recommended service life of a polyethylene helmet is approximately 5 years from the date of manufacture, but this can be reduced if exposed to chemicals or extreme temperatures.

Eye and Face Protection

Safety glasses conforming to CSA Z94.3 must be worn when:

Applying compounds by spray.
Mixing powders (risk of particle projection).
Using rotating tools (grinders, mixers).
Mechanical sanding.

A face shield must be used in addition to safety glasses for high-risk projection work (e.g., cutting metal, applying sprayed plaster).

Respiratory Protection

Gypsum, plaster, and crystalline silica dust are major hazards in this trade. Wearing a respirator is mandatory in the following situations:

Sanding joint compound (gypsum dust).
Mixing plaster powders.
Applying products containing crystalline silica.
Working in confined or poorly ventilated spaces.

Crystalline silica is a known carcinogen. It is found in some powdered joint compounds, cement, and plaster. The occupational exposure limit (OEL) for crystalline silica is 0.025 mg/m³ (8-hour time-weighted average) under Canadian standards. Wearing a NIOSH-approved respirator is mandatory when this limit may be exceeded.

Hand and Arm Protection

Leather or synthetic work gloves protect against cuts, abrasions, and chemical burns. Nitrile or neoprene gloves must be worn when handling chemicals, solvents, or acids. Gloves must be inspected before each use for punctures or wear.

Foot Protection

Safety boots conforming to CSA Z195 must have:

A toe cap resistant to a 125 J impact (Class 1).
A puncture-resistant sole.
A slip-resistant sole.
A high-top design (6 inches minimum) to protect the ankle.

Fall Protection

Working at heights (scaffolds, aerial work platforms, roofs) requires fall protection. Fall protection systems include:

Guardrails (permanent or temporary barriers).
Safety nets.
Fall arrest systems (harnesses, lanyards, anchor points).

The safety harness must conform to CSA Z259.10. The anchor point must be capable of supporting a static load of 22 kN (2,244 kg) as required by CSA Z259.16. The lanyard must be attached above the user's center of gravity to limit the fall distance to a maximum of 1.8 meters.


Trade-Specific Hazards

Dust and Airborne Particles

Sanding joint compound generates fine dust that can cause:

Respiratory tract irritation.
Pulmonary fibrosis (prolonged silica exposure).
Eye and skin irritation.

Control measures:

Use sanders with integrated dust collection.
Dampen surfaces before sanding when possible.
Wear an approved respirator.
Ventilate the work area adequately.

Chemicals and Irritants

Joint compounds often contain fungicides and preservatives that can cause contact dermatitis. Gypsum plaster, lime, and cement are alkaline and can cause chemical burns with prolonged skin contact.

Wear impermeable gloves.
Wash hands frequently.
Apply a barrier cream before work.
Rinse any exposed skin area immediately.

Noise

Noise generated by mixers, mechanical sanders, and compressors can exceed 85 dB(A), the threshold at which hearing protection is required. Hearing protectors (earplugs or earmuffs) must have a noise reduction rating (SNR) of at least 25 dB.

Electrical Hazards

Power tools used on construction sites must be:

Grounded (three-prong plug) or double-insulated.
Connected to circuits protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) .
Inspected before each use (cord, plug, housing).

The Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (Rule 8-200) requires that temporary circuits on construction sites be protected by Class A GFCIs (30 mA) for 15 A and 20 A, 125 V receptacles.

Working at Heights

Scaffolds must be erected by qualified workers and inspected before each use. Basic rules:

The minimum width of a scaffold platform is 1.2 meters.
Guardrails must be installed at a height of 1.0 to 1.1 meters above the platform.
Scaffolds must be stabilized (maximum height of 3 times the base width without anchoring).
Ladders must extend at least 1 meter above the access landing.

Confined Spaces

Confined spaces (tanks, pits, crawl spaces) present risks of asphyxiation, explosion, and poisoning. An entry permit is required, and the following procedures must be followed:

Test the atmosphere before entry (oxygen, combustible gases, toxic gases).
Provide continuous ventilation.
Have an attendant stationed outside.
Provide communication and rescue equipment.

Lifting and Material Handling Principles

Ergonomics and Injury Prevention

Musculoskeletal injuries are the most common cause of absenteeism in the trade. Basic principles of safe lifting:

CPR and AED

The drywall finisher and plasterer must be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) . Chest compressions must be performed at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute, with a depth of 5 to 6 cm in adults.


Hygiene and Site Cleanliness

Waste Management

Gypsum and plaster waste should not be mixed with ordinary construction waste if it is intended for recycling. Gypsum can be recycled to make new boards or used as a soil amendment. Empty compound buckets must be rinsed before disposal.

Tool Cleaning

Tools must be cleaned immediately after use:

Trowels and floats: cleaned with clean water, dried, and oiled.
Mixers: cleaned before the compound hardens.
Spray guns: flushed with water or an appropriate solvent depending on the product.

Dust Control

Dust control is essential for worker health and finish quality. The following measures must be taken:

Enclose work areas with protective sheeting.
Use fans to direct dust outside.

The area of a rectangular wall is calculated as: Length × Height.

Example: A wall 4 m long and 2.4 m high has an area of 4 × 2.4 = 9.6 m².

For a wall with openings (doors, windows), subtract the area of the openings:

Example: A 4 m × 2.4 m wall with a 0.9 m × 2.0 m door:

Calculating the Number of Gypsum Boards

Number of boards = Total area ÷ Area of one board

A 4 ft × 8 ft (1.2 m × 2.4 m) board covers 9.6 sq ft (0.89 m²). For a 9.6 m² wall, you need 9.6 ÷ 0.89 = 10.8 boards, so 11 boards (round up to the next whole number).
