1. Reading and Interpreting Plans and Specifications

1.1 Key Elements of a Cabinet Plan

Before any fabrication begins, you must be able to read a shop drawing accurately. Custom cabinetry plans typically include:

The elevation view: shows the front face of the cabinets, the layout of doors, drawers, and appliances.
The plan view: a top-down view indicating countertop depth, wall positions, and clearances.
The cuts and sections: reveal the internal construction, material thicknesses, and assembly details.
The specification sheet: specifies materials, finishes, hardware, and tolerances.

1.2 Scale and Dimensioning

Plans are typically drawn at 1:1 scale for details, 1:2 for elevations, and 1:5 for overall views. Always verify actual dimensions rather than measuring directly off the plan. Dimensions are expressed in millimetres (mm) in modern Canadian practice, although some imperial conversions may still be encountered.

Quick conversion calculation: 1 inch = 25.4 mm. To convert inches to millimetres, multiply by 25.4. To convert millimetres to inches, divide by 25.4.

2. Selection and Preparation of Materials

2.1 Solid Wood

Solid wood is used for doors, drawer fronts, mouldings, and certain freestanding furniture pieces. Common species in Canada include maple, red oak, cherry, walnut, and birch. Each species has distinct characteristics:

Maple: hard, fine grain, ideal for light finishes.
Red oak: pronounced grain, durable, accepts dark stains well.
Cherry: darkens with age, straight grain, easy to machine.
Walnut: rich colour, stable, expensive.
Birch: economical, uniform grain, used for panels.

2.2 Wood-Derived Panels

Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is used for lacquered doors and painted components. Particleboard with melamine veneer is common for cabinet boxes. Baltic birch plywood (B/BB) is preferred for drawers and high-quality cabinet boxes.

Rule of thumb: For a standard cabinet box, use 16 mm particleboard with melamine on both sides. For shelves supporting heavy loads (over 30 kg), increase the thickness to 19 mm or reduce the clear span to less than 600 mm.

2.3 Moisture Content

Solid wood must have a moisture content of 6 to 9% for interior use in Canada. Use a pin-type moisture meter to verify before machining. Wood that is too wet will shrink after installation, causing cracks and gaps. Wood that is too dry will absorb ambient moisture and swell.

Trap to avoid: Never machine solid wood whose moisture content differs by more than 2% from that of the final installation location.


3. Cabinet Box Fabrication Techniques

3.1 Frameless Construction

The most common method for custom cabinetry is frameless construction. Cabinet boxes are fabricated from 16 mm panels, assembled with dowels, screws, and glue. The front edges are covered with melamine or PVC edge banding.

Cabinet box assembly procedure:

38.Apply edge banding to all visible edges.
39.Drill holes for the dowels (typically 2 dowels of 8 mm per joint).

42.Allow the glue to dry for the recommended time (typically 30 to 60 minutes with PVA glue).

3.2 Face Frame Construction

This traditional method uses a solid wood frame attached to the front of the cabinet box. Doors are installed on this frame. It offers greater rigidity but reduces the usable opening by approximately 30 mm per side.

3.3 Calculating Cabinet Box Dimensions

For a standard base cabinet 36 inches (914 mm) wide:

Side panel thickness: 16 mm each
Inside width: 914 − (2 × 16) = 882 mm
Standard depth: 610 mm (24 inches) for a base cabinet
Standard height: 864 mm (34 inches) without countertop

Formula for door width: (Cabinet width − total gaps) ÷ number of doors.

For a 914 mm cabinet with two doors and a 3 mm gap between them:

(914 − 3) ÷ 2 = 455.5 mm per door.


4. Fabrication of Doors and Drawer Fronts

4.1 Door Types

Slab door: MDF or solid wood panel, simple and modern.
Raised panel door: solid wood frame with a raised centre panel.
Flat panel door: frame and panel at the same level.
Glass door: frame with glass or acrylic, used for display cabinets.

4.2 Machining Panel Doors

For a raised panel door, the frame is assembled with mortise and tenon joints or dowels. The centre panel is machined with a bevel or quarter-round profile, then inserted into a groove in the frame. The panel must be free to expand; never glue the panel into the groove.

Expansion rule: Leave a 3 to 5 mm gap between the panel and the bottom of the groove to allow for seasonal wood movement.

4.3 Drawer Fronts

Drawer fronts are typically fabricated from the same material as the doors to ensure visual continuity. They are attached to the drawer from the inside with 30 mm screws, through oblong holes to allow for vertical and horizontal adjustment.


5. Hardware and Fittings

5.1 Hinges

European hinges (or inset hinges) are the most common for frameless cabinets. They are classified by opening angle (90°, 110°, 170°) and by mounting type:

Installation rule: The standard distance between the door edge and the hinge centre is 3 mm for a full-overlay door. For partial overlay, this distance increases to 9 or 10 mm.

5.2 Drawer Slides

Ball-bearing slides are the most reliable. They are classified by load capacity and travel:

Partial-extension slide: 75% extension, 45 kg capacity.
Full-extension slide: 100% extension, 45 to 90 kg capacity.
Soft-close slide: full extension with a damping mechanism.

Slide length calculation: The slide length must equal the drawer depth minus 25 mm. For example, a 500 mm deep drawer requires a 475 mm slide.

5.3 Handles and Knobs

The standard handle placement is 100 mm from the top edge of the door or drawer front. For upper cabinets, place handles at an accessible height of 900 to 1200 mm from the floor.


6. Cabinet Installation

6.1 Site Preparation

Before installation, verify:

Wall plumbness using a laser level or plumb bob.
Squareness of corners (walls are never perfectly straight).
Floor flatness (tolerance of 3 mm over 3 m).
The presence of electrical conduits, plumbing, or ventilation in the walls.

6.2 Base Cabinet Installation

Procedure:

91.Draw a level line on the wall at the desired height of the top of the base cabinets (typically 864 mm from the floor).
92.Install corner cabinets first, then work outward.
93.Use plastic or wood shims to adjust plumb and level.
94.Fasten cabinets to the wall with 75 mm (minimum) hex-head screws into the studs. Use appropriate anchors (molly, toggler) for drywall.
95.Join cabinets together with 25 mm screws through the side walls.
96.Check the alignment of the faces with a straightedge.

Fastening rule: Each cabinet must be fastened to the wall with at least two screws, one at the top and one at the bottom, into the rear mounting rail. For cabinets over 900 mm wide, add a centre screw.

6.3 Upper Cabinet Installation

Upper cabinets are installed at a height of 450 to 500 mm above the countertop, or approximately 1370 mm from the floor to the bottom of the cabinet. Use a temporary mounting bracket or a support board to hold the cabinets in place while fastening.

Fastening: Use 75 mm screws into the studs. For drywall without studs, use toggle bolts with a 45 kg capacity per anchor.

6.4 Final Alignment and Levelling

After all cabinets are installed:

Check door alignment with a uniform 2 to 3 mm gap.
Adjust the hinges (vertical, horizontal, and depth adjustment).
Verify the opening and closing of each door and drawer.
Adjust the levelling feet on base cabinets to compensate for floor irregularities.

7. Countertop Installation

7.1 Countertop Types

Laminate (Formica): economical, requires a particleboard substrate.
Natural stone (granite, quartz): heavy, requires a rigid substrate.
Solid wood (butcher block): requires surface treatment.
Solid surface (Corian): seamless, requires specialized machining.

7.2 Laminate Countertop Installation

115.Verify that the base cabinets are level.
116.Install support clips or apply a bead of silicone to the top of the cabinets.
117.Set the countertop and check for level in both directions.
118.Secure the countertop from underneath with 25 mm screws through the Z-clips.

7.3 Countertop Dimension Calculations

For an L-shaped countertop with a return:

Measure each section separately.
Add 20 mm of installation clearance (10 mm on each side).
For joints, allow a minimum 30 mm overlap.

Formula for a countertop with backsplash: Backsplash height = 100 mm standard, or 150 mm if specified in the specifications.


8. Applicable Canadian Standards and Codes

8.1 Canadian Electrical Code, Part I

Cabinets installed near electrical equipment must comply with minimum clearances. Rule 8-200 of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CE Code) specifies clearance distances around electrical panels. No cabinet may obstruct access to an electrical panel; a 1 metre clearance in front of the panel is required.

8.2 CSA B149.1 — Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code

For cabinets installed above a gas range, clause 6.18.1 of CSA B149.1 requires a minimum clearance of 600 mm between the burner and the bottom surface of the cabinet, unless a ventilation hood is installed. In that case, the clearance may be reduced to 450 mm if the hood is certified for that use.

8.3 Product Safety Standards

Cabinets and furniture installed in Canada must comply with the requirements of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA). Glass doors must use tempered or laminated glass if the glass surface exceeds 0.5 m².

8.4 Accessibility (CSA B651 Standards)

For accessible projects, the CSA B651 standard specifies:

Accessible countertop height: 760 to 865 mm from the floor.
Clearance under countertop: 685 mm minimum.
Maximum side reach: 1220 mm.

9. Finishing and Quality Control

9.1 Surface Preparation

Before applying the finish:

Sand with progressive grits: 120, 180, 220.
Dust carefully with a tack cloth.
Check for scratches, residual glue, or machining marks.

Basic formula: Total cost = (panel surface area × price per m²) + hardware + finishing + labour.

For a 914 × 864 × 610 mm cabinet box:

Required panel surface: 2 sides (2 × 0.864 × 0.610) + top/bottom (2 × 0.914 × 0.610) + back (0.914 × 0.864) = 1.054 + 1.115 + 0.790 = 2.959 m².
Add 15% waste: 2.959 × 1.15 = 3.40 m².
