GMAW Welding (MIG/MAG)
GMAW uses a continuous wire electrode fed automatically and an external shielding gas (argon, CO2, or a mix). It's called MIG (Metal Inert Gas) with an inert gas and MAG (Metal Active Gas) with an active gas like CO2.
Advantages of GMAW
- High productivity: the continuous wire allows uninterrupted welding, ideal for production work

Disadvantages of GMAW

- Less portable: the weight of the cylinder and feeder limits mobility on site
- Surface preparation: requires clean metal, free of rust and paint
- Gas cost: cylinders and shielding gas add a recurring expense
Comparison Criteria for Choosing Wisely
- Work environment: outdoor site with wind → SMAW. Enclosed workshop → GMAW
- Metal thickness: thin sheets (< 3 mm) → GMAW. Thick pieces (> 6 mm) → both work, SMAW often preferred for multi-pass
- Production volume: series welding → GMAW. Occasional repair → SMAW
- Visual quality: visible weld → GMAW. Hidden structural weld → SMAW
- Equipment budget: limited → SMAW (welding machine from $300). Higher → GMAW (machine + feeder + gas from $800)
- Welding position: overhead or vertical → SMAW (better pool control). Flat or horizontal → GMAW (faster)
Which Process for the Red Seal Exam?
The Red Seal welder qualification certifies welders according to CSA W47.1 (Certification of Fusion Welding Companies). The practical exam can cover both processes, but:
- SMAW is most often required for structural certifications (steel frames, bridges, buildings)
- GMAW is common for shop fabrication certifications (tanks, light structures)
- CSA W47.1 requires the welder to be qualified for each process used — an SMAW certification doesn't cover GMAW and vice versa
If you're aiming for structural welding certification, start with SMAW. If you work in manufacturing fabrication, GMAW will be more relevant. Either way, exam prep should include knowledge of parameters (amperage, voltage, travel speed) and welding positions (1G to 6G).
